Why Do You think Ipods Are Considered the Best mp3 Players?
lllllll asked:
I noticed that people who are ‘technologically iliteratte’ have no idea what Mp3 players are yet they own an Ipod.
What aspect about ipods made the world fall in love with them?
Do you think that they are overrated or do they deserve there stance of King of the Portable media.

Apple’s Ipod’s can be awesome if they would last. I went threw two of them before throwing in the towel. I now own a Zune and can say I’m very pleased. So If this answers the question. No, I think ipods are not the best choice.

There’s a whole nother story behind ipods. iPods brought the “gadget” world into something we can all get into. No other company even considers the kind of design apple does. The first ipod had a scroll wheel and it was like $500 but people slowly started buying it b/c famous people had them and you would only see cool people walking around with those white earbuds.

I think the iPod, like many other Apple products are as popular as they are because they have an attractive design, easy for stupid people to use and most of all, have a massive list of accessories for all the brain dead consumer morons to buy. Really, who needs a fuzzy leopard print sleeve anyways?
If it weren’t for marketing, compatibility and the continuation of the iPod “format” (or operating system, whatever you want to call it), they would be like any other mp3 player, the first model would have come out, and months later, would have been completely replaced by a totally different one with the Apple logo on it.
Btw, in your last sentence, you misspelled their (not there)

Totally over-rated.
Here’s why.
1. iPods are limited to one computer (one version of iTunes) unless you want to spend hours learning how to hack it. (Samsung, Sansa, and other off brands aren’t exclusive)
2. iTunes software (required to use) actually loads restrictions on your current crop of mp3 files. So instead of having total flexibility before you installed iTunes, you are now limited to burning the songs to CD, or loading them on playlists a limited amount of time.
3. That “limited amount of time” is whatever Apple decides it is, and is subject to change at their discretion.
4. You can’t load other files (word docs, powerpoint presentations, excel spreadsheets) onto an Apple. So much for flexibility. Most other mp3 players allow you to store files on them - sort of like an mp3 player/flash-drive combination.
5. The price is astounding.
6. Customer service is terrible. The batteries only last a few months outside of the warranty.
7. Other mp3 players usually offer an FM tuner included. Apple never has.
8. mp4 and aac files (iTunes files) are usually limited to 128kbs, and stifle the quality. Good mp3’s are 192kbps to 320kbps. So the 99 cents you spent really got you an inferior copy of a really great sounding track.
The jog dial is awesome; no argument there - but the “status” of being “just like everybody else” is completely intolerable. There are a lot of good choices out there.
Best of luck to you!

i think apple has earned “best MP3 player” because it really is and it is a deserved title. I set up MP3 systems as a side line and always recommend apple first and creative as a close second. as with any hardware you will have models that have glitches but for the most part people either do not understand how to use them, musunderstand what the software is capable of or misuse it. if i purchase something and don’t know how to use it or expect it to do things that it’s not capable of, i’m going to run into some issues. that goes for anything from a car to a deepfryer. so there has to be some consumer responsibility here too.
apple entered the MP3 player market at a shrewd and crucial time. there was the advent to P2P file sharing and tons of press regarding the legalities of Kazaa, Napster and so on. digital technology had been introduced but was just becoming one of the hot topics in the media world from TV - Cable -DVD etc. there was also the continuing “war” between Apple and Microsoft. i think apple expected to see some success but i also think even they are surprised by how this thing just took off. shrewd marketing and design shoved everyone out of the market. if the product didn’t have some merit it would not continue to outsell at every level.
so i refute the previous answer with the following 1. iPods do indeed use iTunes. it is the software that allows the device to communicatre with your computer. iTunes is simple straight forward and easy to use. it is also free. there are no requirements to purchase your music from iTunes and you can use your own video/music files etc. you do not have to spend hours learning how to hack anything. exclusive to one computer was apples attempt at avoiding piracy - which i find commendable. use the product but do it with some integrity. 2. the only restrictions imposed by iTunes is on the music your purchase from their store. you are limited to 7 duplicates of a purchased title - so you can ONLY burn 7 copies of what you bought. if you’re really just using for personal use why do you need more than 7 copies? also you can buy music without DRM for a $.20 more that allows you to burn an umlimited number of copies. your option. 3. there is no time limit on how many times you can add a song to the playlist - you could have 500 playlists with the same song on it 500 times. 4. i load calendars, contacts and other documents to my iPod using the enable disk use feature. 5. i have found that customer service is excellent. i personally own 3 different iPods right now and have purchased probably 12 different models over the past 4 years for family use only. i recently contacted apple over a concern with the new classic. they stood by their product and actually comped me on some accessories. 6. i have an iPod which is over 4 years old and i have never needed to replace the battery. i’m sure i will soon - but am satisfied with the life of it. 7. i don’t care about the radio function. i do like the video aspect and as with everything there’s usually a trade off. 8.when using iTunes you have the option to use not only MP3 format but 5 different format options which do not compromise quality. (see apple lossless technology). this is another great thing about iTunes you have sooo many options. again know your software and hardware before making any assumptions. on price - well you get what you pay for.
